On Thursday November 14th, Margaret Busby came to Royal Holloway, University of London for a Q&A and reading of her newly released anthology New Daughters of Africa (2019).
Due to receive an honorary doctorate in 2020 from Royal Holloway’s Department of English, Margaret Busby is an alumna of Royal Holloway and was Britain’s youngest and first black female publisher. She co-founded the publishing house Allison and Busby, in the 1960s. In 1992, she edited Daughters of Africa, an anthology of words and writings by women of African descent from Ancient Egyptian to contemporary times. New daughters of Africa includes a contribution from the Royal Holloway English Department’s Nadifa Mohamed.
Margaret provided inspirational insights on her journey to becoming a pioneer in the publishing industry and how she dealt with the barriers of the time. Her ingenuity, drive, entrepreneurial spirit, and insight are precisely the characteristics the Enterprise Hub aims to help develop in aspiring entrepreneurs.
